Where to go in Buon Me Thuot? – Ban Don – Don Village

Located 40 km northwest away from Buon Me Thuot center, Ban Don (Don village) is the most famous place of hunting and training wild elephants. It used to be the capital of Dak Lak province. Now, Ban Don is a tourist site and also is home to Ede Ethnic people.

Although the main residential people here is Ede, Ban Don had a mix culture of ethnic group including the Ede, M’Nong and Lao. Surprise? Ethnic Lao also live in this village because Ban Don is very close to Lao border. Taking a walk around the village, you can easily see stilt houses in unique shapes. So, you can also understand more about the daily life of people here.

Da Voi Me – Mother elephant rock

Mother elephant mountain is in the commune of Yang Tao (Lak district). It is about 40 km away from the Buon Me Thuot city center along Highway 27. Yang Tao Elephant Rock consists of Father Elephant and Mother Elephant Rocks. It lies in the middle of the mountains and forests, and contains thrilling and mysterious legends.

Mother Elephant Rock is estimated 200 meters in length. The circumference of the rock is about 500m, about 30m high and weighs ten thousands of tons. This is the largest monolith in Vietnam.

From the ground, it only takes about 15 minutes to reach the highest point of the rock by climbing over gentle slopes. From the top of the Mother Elephant Rock, you can have an overview of many other tourist attractions such as Yang Reh Lake and Chu Yang Sin Range – the roof of the Central Highlands.

Coming to the top of the Mother Elephant Rock is not too difficult. However, you have to be careful because the surface is quite smooth. There are very few places to hold on the rock. If you climb it on a strong wind day, the trip to the top of the Mother Elephant Rock is quite risky. Because the climber can be washed away from the cliff by the wind.
